Riverview
North city, St. Louis
A pair of ajoining industrial sites stands near the Mississippi along Riverview Drive, just north of where Hall Street dies into it, in a thin strip of city land that stretches the city's boundardies northward.
Two companies stood here: the Missouri Portland Cement Company (later LaFarge), and the GAF Corporation, a manufacturer of building products.
The LaFarge site was purchased in 2000 by Bob Cassilly, the creative force behind downtown's City Museum; his plans called for transforming the site into a similarly interactive exhibit showcasing industrial machinery. My visit in May 2005 showed no evidence of current activity at the plant.
