Pet Milk Building
400 S. 4th Street - downtown
Architect: A.L. Aydelott
1969
It is rare that Brutalism in raw concrete has been pulled off so successfully as in this prominent downtown landmark. A complex grid of lintels, shades, porches and bay windows gives this 15-story tower the same sort of deep articulation and heavy shadow which enlivens older buildings like the Old Post Office. Perhaps the cap is too heavy, but the facade offers endless interest in its weaving complexity. The Pet building succeeds where so many of its contemporaries failed; poorer versions of this style are part of what turned the public against Modernism.
After a short period of vacancy, the tower is being renovated into apartments.
