River Roads Mall
I returned in March 2007 to find that the Stix building was about 3/4ths gone.
It is never easy to watch a fine building come down, but the destruction of the bowtie tile wall was particularly painful. This wall was a work of art -- an array of complex, complicated, overlapping forms created by the artful combination of simple repeating elements, rendered in harmonious and beautiful shades of green and white.
It could have gone in a museum. Instead it will go in a landfill.
Demolition was eventually carried to completion, but the planned project was one of the many victims of the 2008 economic collapse. As of late 2011, the site remains empty.
