St. Henry's Church
This handsome old church was located at the intersection of Rutger and California Streets, in the neighborhoods just south of the industrial valley that bisects the city east to west. It had to be boarded up after a fire damaged the interior and weakened the structure. Transients soon made it a home, and a second fire in early 1996 damaged it beyond repair (including a collapse of the southern bell tower) before the congregation had a chance to renovate the building.
Everything but the northern tower was demolished; the tower remained for several years as a surreal monument to the decay of this down-at-the-heels neighborhood. It too was razed in 2002.
