Westminster Presbyterian Church
5300 Delmar Avenue
St. Louis (Central West End)
Architect: Albert Groves
1917
A.B. Groves used an English Gothic model for Westminster Presbyterian Church, a handsome building of spare detailing inside and out. The sanctuary is a tall, austere space, with heavy, dark woodwork concentrated around the organ, choir and pulpit. Stained glass windows of mostly abstract patterns provide light in shades of reds and blues. A dark paneled ceiling and dark tiled floor add to the quiet restraint of the interior.
The congregation has a long history of westward moves from its original location downtown; this is its fourth location. The end wall window was originally installed in the previous building, a Midtown structure that stood where the Fox Theater is today. Adaptation to its new home required the addition of several extra panels.
