The Pulitzer building has a new neighbor, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. It is shown here during construction in 2002. The sleek, modern building was designed by Portland architect Brad Cloepfil and opened in 2003.

I took a tour in March 2007. The atmosphere is clearly indebted to Ando's building next door -- serene, calm, clear, not fussy, cool and modern, concrete and steel.

The building does not engage in Ando's acrobatics with light; instead it provides much larger and presumably more flexible gallery spaces.

The two institutions are joined by a shared sculpture court.
