The western parts of the neighborhood, especially those that abut the freeway, are thinned out and scattered.

Smaller houses give the area a small-town atmosphere, while sliced-off streets and isolated buildings create occasionally surreal street scenes, such as this two-story mixed use commercial building at Koeln and Alaska. Around it are a large industrial building, an entire vacant city block, and an overpass for I-55.

Along the River des Peres, several industrial concerns still operate today, most visibly this Monsanto chemical plant. The Anton Schmitt house was relocated from this site in 1992.

Nearby Alabama Avenue is one of only two streets that crosses River des Pere.

Ivory Avenue cuts a diagonal slash through the area's rectangular grid. Adapting houses on the grid with frontage on Ivory sometimes yielded strange results..
