November 2005: The 1400 block of Monroe, a block west of the previous page. The view here is looking west; the houses at left are shown below.

October 2002: 1446 Monroe is empty and crumbling.

Above: The same block of houses, November 2005. A remarkable gut rehab is underway, one of several that are completely rebuilding old houses from the ground up.
September 2006: completion!

November 2005: the same block from the rear during the reconstruction.

January 1999: Across the street to the east. The collapsing one-story corner building was demolished within the next two years.
|
|
November 2005: The same block, also undergoing gut rehab. Extensive brick repair has been performed, and oddly enough, the left-hand unit's street level door and window have exchanged places. The outline of the storefront building and its chimney remain visible on the party wall.

|
December 2002: Next door to the houses above, this sad little playground stood long unused and unmaintained. Part of the 1960s-1970s "vest pocket park" movement, it probably made more sense when the area wasn't full of vacant lots and empty fields. It has since been removed; the rocket ship/slide has reappeared at a day care center a mile or two west, with a fresh coat of paint.
