Union Avenue Christian Church

733 Union Boulevard
St. Louis (Central West End)
Architect: Albert Groves, 1904 (Chapel)
Weber & Groves, 1907 (Sanctuary)

Union Avenue Christian Church is part of a cluster of religious buildings at Union and Delmar, sort of a mini-Holy Corners.

The church remains in the care of the congregation that built it; however, numbers have dwindled as the metro area's population drifted west. To supplement income, the church rents its sanctuary out to the Union Avenue Opera, a local theater company. Worship services are held in the adjoining chapel space during the theater's season. A current renovation of the sanctuary will make the two uses more compatible.

The Italian Romanesque building is faced in stone in alternating bands, throwing spectacular shadows across its face as the sun passes over it.
