1601 Washington Avenue
Windows on Washington
Originally: St. Louis Transit Company
Architect: unknown - 1903
The building was originally a power plant for the St. Louis Transit Company's streetcar lines. Through the 1990s, it housed the Business Products Center.
For decades, aluminum siding marred the street facades and replaces the cornice on this building. Today it has been transformatively remodeled, the ground floor serving as part of the Windows on Washington event complex. Though the cornice was not restored, the sheet metal covering that obscured the ground floors has been removed, new windows have been cut into the west-facing party wall, the brickwork is freshly painted, and a whimsical neon sign adorns the upper floors.
