1301 Washington Avenue

Fashion Square
Architect: David R. Harrison, 1926

When I first encountered it in 2000, Fashion Square's rusted spandrels added an aged, almost ancient quality to the massive, Gothic-styled warehouse. Renovation has since cleaned up the building's exterior, adding respectability at the expense of mystique.

Fashion Square was built with the intention that it would be a showcase of style for clothing and hat wholesalers. It featured basement garage parking for salesmen. In 2004 it was converted to a mixed use building including residential above with retail remaining at street level.
